Chicken vs. Egg

Have you ever heard someone say:

“If I get all A’s, then I’ll be happy”, “If I lose 10lbs, then I’ll be happy”, “If I get that promotion, then I’ll be happy”

I know I’ve said those things in the past!!!!

Have you ever wondered why when a sports team is winning, they seem to play better? For example, the Seahawks Sunday night?!

The truth is – HAPPINESS COMES FIRST.

As you know I’m reading The Happiness Advantage, by Shawn Anchor. Let me share some amazing, WHOA moments I had while reading…

- Happiness is the PRECURSOR to success. It fuels performance and achievement.

- 100s of businesses and people have been followed and researched to show that happiness increases our motivation, efficiency, resilience, creativeness, and production – What does this equal?!?! INCREASED PRODUCTION --> SUCCESS

Positive vs. Negative emotions:

- Negative emotions: kicks in the fight or flight system in your brain (sympathetic, anxiety), it narrows the areas of your brain to only the areas needed for survival, it takes all blood from unnecessary areas in the body to make sure you can RUN and FIGHT the murderer chasing you.

VS.

- Positive emotions: Broadens the areas in your brain to new possibilities, increases the amount of information we process, makes us thoughtful, creative, and open to new ideas. Happiness allows all areas of our body and brain to work at one time!

- WHOA fact: positive emotions actually increase dopamine and serotonin in the brain (this is what anti-depressants do!!!)

PEOPLE – THIS WAS TESTED ON REAL PEOPLE. To test this researchers would "happy-prime" individuals, with bowls of candy, a funny video, or a gift… and then compare their thought process to people who weren’t primed in a happy way!!!!!!

NERD ALERT:
Did you know happiness has an affect on your actual visual cortex in your brain?! That you actually see better, see further, and think more when your happy?

Scientists did something called eye tracking on the people that were given the bowl of candy or the present before scanning the brain. The happy individuals actually saw MORE and the brain showed that they had expanded their peripheral line of vision compared to the others.
